A Viennese Walk

How do the black forests taste?
The sidewalk graffiti’s all wrong
It all looks like such a waste
The grime clings to the bruise
It feels just like breaking news
They’re taking you
Away
And into these rooms

It’s a slice of memory
Only imagined
And I have never seen
such a thing

And the gold clings to the windows
Those below look so embellished
But the warmth here’s all hollow
As if something has vanished
The lifeline’s on the bruise
Pull and it all comes loose
and I assume
you
will be going soon

You lost your head
and I
thought it was just the same
as every other time
Maybe you should save face
I am still cradling mine
Is this any way
to end your reign?
Before we’re all soaked in brine

It’s a slice of memory
Only imagined
And I have never seen
such a thing
It’s just out of reach
It’s right there
And I have never seen
such a thing

So let’s stay here and watch in awe
As frozen faces watch us pass
Hold back the tongue, tooth and claw
And watch them roll by as
We go through the harrowing cruise
Seeing no pathway that wasn’t misused
And we’ll confuse
The truth
with these kinds cues

You lost your head
and I
thought it was just the same
as every other time
Maybe you should save face
I am still cradling mine
Is this any way
to end your reign?
Before we’re all soaked in brine
You lost your head
and I
thought it was just the same
as every other time

How do the black forests taste?
It goes down like distance and haze
And I think back to a moment
Suspended in the air
That I will never forget
And I will never find it there

You lost your head
and I
thought it was just the same
as every other time
Maybe you should save face
I am still cradling mine
Is this any way
to end your reign?
Every single time

…and during my stay in Bratislava, one day, we decided to go to Vienna to eat the black forest cake, which my grandmother adored.  Things didn’t quite go as planned.
